PG40 IMPACT INITIATIVE Marking 40 years of the Pell Grants — In partnership with The advent of 2012 marks the 40th anniversary of the Pell Grants. Senator Claiborne Pell (D-RI), who served in the U.S. Senate from 1961 to 1997, was the principal sponsor of the federal Basic Educational Opportunity Grant which was renamed the Pell Grants in 1980 in his honor.
