Call for Papers
25th Annual SFARN Conference
The Baltimore Marriott Waterfront Hotel, Baltimore, MD
June 12-14, 2008

The Student Financial Aid Research Network (SFARN) seeks proposals for presentations at the 25th Annual Conference to be held in Baltimore, MD. Proposals should be based on national, state or institutional level research or inquiries on student aid, college costs, student access, choice, and retention issues, or related matters. The Network is a national association of practitioners and consumers of research and policy analysis on student financial aid. Its members come from state grant and loan agencies, federal agencies, faculties and staff of postsecondary institutions, education associations, and other groups. The Network was created by members of the National Association of State Student Grant and Aid Programs (NASSGAP) and the National Council for Higher Education Loan Programs (NCHELP) to encourage and disseminate research to inform public policies at the state and federal levels.

Proposals may be for individual papers or panel discussions. The conference uses a plenary session format in which presentations are made to the entire audience (between 100 to 130 participants). Individual presentations are usually limited to 30 minutes, while panels may be up to one hour. To help you better understand the breadth of topics covered, a list of selected titles from past conference presentations can be found on this page. Given that we will celebrate 25 years of research on student aid this year, papers /research that address changes (both positive and negative) over time in terms of access, opportunity, affordability, and success will receive special attention.

Please send a one-page abstract of your proposal by February 1, 2008 via email to Colleen O'Brien at:

The SFARN Planning Committee regrets that our budget does not allow us to waive the nominal Conference registration fee for persons selected to make presentations. However, we do have "tuition remission" grants available for graduate students who may wish to present papers—these are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Registration materials will be sent in March to all of those on the Network mailing list. If you are not on the list, please email your name and contact information to the Pell Institute addresses above. In addition, the Planning Committee encourages you to please forward this to any interested parties and/or any list-serves or mailing lists that you think would benefit from knowing about this. In particular, please forward to colleagues who may have attended in the past – we are hoping to get some of them back with us. As always, we apologize for any duplicates you may receive – please let us know as the list maintenance is ongoing.
